Case Study?

Post  AHansen on Sat May 23, 2009 8:58 pm

Does your department do a case study of the patients you have transported so that all members have an opportunity to learn something new from each call? If so, how often? If not, do you feel that it would be beneficial?

I think it would be very beneficial, though in truth it would be cost ineffective for a dept of our small size to develop somehting like that on our own. Now if some EMS tech savy person developed and additon to say... the Firehouse software that we use to track our calls then it would be a great benefit to dept's and could make someone some cash as well. What exactly were you thinking?

A case study doesn't need to be done on every patient. Just something similar to what a lot of hospitals do, pick a patient and discuss how things went with that particular patient.

The department that I work for now is a small, rural community. We meet regularly once a month for "training" and a monthly meeting. Was thinking if we could throw something like a case study into the mix that then we would walk away with even more info. I do realize that not every case/call is the same, but there are a lot of similarities between most calls. Just something to help inform everyone on the department of the type of treatment individuals are doing and try to walk away with some better information.

We do this after most calls. As a newer medic I am constantly sitting down with my senior guys and talking about what I can do better. We haven't done anythign official except for the tape and charts etc.
